There is a line in an ancient gospel that has disturbed, fascinated, and been suppressed for nearly two thousand years.

It describes Jesus kissing Mary Magdalene on the mouth. And it describes the male disciples watching and growing jealous. Asking why he loved her more than he loved them.

That single image was considered so threatening that the institution built in Jesus's name spent centuries trying to ensure you would never read it. 🕯️

Recovered from the sands of Nag Hammadi in 1945 alongside the Gospel of Mary and the Pistis Sophia, the Gospel of Philip is a Valentinian Gnostic text so radically different from what the institutional church sanctioned that the early church fathers condemned it as heresy before it was buried in the Egyptian desert. Sixteen hundred years in the sand. And it came back anyway. 🌀

What it reveals about Jesus, about Mary Magdalene, and about the nature of divine union is something the official story was never willing to tell you.

Because the Mary of the Gnostic texts is not a reformed prostitute. That identification came from a single sermon delivered by Pope Gregory the First in 591 AD, not from scripture, not from revelation, but from a decision made by one man that shaped the way an entire civilization understood one of the most important figures in the story of Jesus. It was not an accident. It was a strategy. ✨

In the Gospel of Philip she is called his koinonos. A Greek word meaning companion, partner, counterpart. And the kiss was not favoritism. In Gnostic understanding the kiss on the mouth between a teacher of gnosis and a spiritually prepared student represented the direct transmission of the pneuma. Breath to breath. Soul to soul. The living spiritual knowing that cannot be conveyed through words alone. 👁️
