The Affair of the Diamond Necklace was a fraudulent scheme to acquire an expensive diamond necklace, which was falsely claimed to be for Queen Marie Antoinette. The scandal implicated the Queen and severely damaged her reputation. I found it fascinating to learn about the wider implications of this scandal when viewed in the context of the tension leading up to the French Revolution.
