You need a BA or BS or any college degree in any subject from any accredited university. It does not have to have anything to do with teaching, English or language.

You probably get tons of email, but I hope you respond to this. My name is Erin, I'm 26 years old, and I'm trying to decide what I want to do in life. I'm considering becoming an ESL teacher in Japan, possibly for a long term career. I've been interested in East Asia and Japan for a long time now, and teaching English over there is the only thing I can think of that would allow me to have a job related to my interest (unless you can think of jobs in America that are Asia-related?). Since you have been teaching English in Japan for so long, I wanted to ask you a few things: Do you miss America? If yes, what do you miss? If no, why not? What do you not miss about America? How is the job market for teaching English in Japan? What do you like about living in Japan? What do you not like? What qualities or qualifications do ESL employers look for in teachers? I'm planning on getting a Bachelor's degree in Japanese, myself. Is an interest in Japanese culture enough to enjoy life there? Are there jobs other than teaching that an English-speaking foreigner could do in Japan? How is the cost of living in Japan? I know the bigger cities are really expensive, but what about other places? Do ESL jobs pay well? What are the chances of making at least $30k/year? How is the expat community in Japan? Is it hard to find other expats in your area? Is it hard for a foreigner to make new friends in Japan? What about finding a boyfriend (especially if I'm not going to be over there until I'm in my early thirties--are there still plenty of singles for that age group?)? What about crime? I've heard it's pretty safe there, but I've also gathered the impression that rape is really high.
If you can't tell, my main concerns about moving to Japan are missing home, finding a job, and being lonely. I'd really appreciate it if you responded. Sorry if I bombarded you. :)
