The church called her a prostitute. A fallen woman redeemed by the grace of a man. A characterization with no basis in any gospel text, invented by a single papal sermon in 591 AD and held officially for fourteen hundred years.

Popular culture called her his wife. The hidden beloved. The mother of a secret bloodline. A version that feels more progressive but still places her identity in the same location. Derivative of him. Meaningful because of her connection to him rather than because of what lived and moved and arose from within her.

Because what the actual evidence, the actual Gnostic texts, the actual scholarly record, and the actual theological tradition that predates both distortions tells us about Mary Magdalene is more radical, more liberating, and more genuinely extraordinary than either version has ever come close to suggesting.
