Means: do you want to / would you like to
Example: Fancy a cup of tea?
Cheers
Means: thanks, or sometimes goodbye informally
Example: Cheers for your help.
Mate
Means: friend, used very casually
Example: You alright, mate?
You alright?
A common greeting, not a health question
Example: You alright?
Response: Yeah, you?
Knackered
Means: very tired
Example: I’m absolutely knackered today.
Gutted
Means: very disappointed
Example: I was gutted when it got cancelled.
Chuffed
Means: pleased or proud
Example: She was chuffed with her results.
Peckish
Means: slightly hungry
Example: I’m feeling a bit peckish.
Sorted
Means: resolved, taken care of
Example: Tickets booked, hotel confirmed, sorted.
Proper
Used for emphasis, like really or truly
Example: That was a proper good film.
Not my cup of tea
Means: not something I like
Example: Football isn’t my cup of tea.
Bit dodgy
Means: suspicious or unreliable
Example: That website looks a bit dodgy.
Lovely
Means: nice, pleasant, or kind
Example: That’s lovely, thank you.

A very British way to say goodbye

Means: I don’t mind, I have no preference

I’m game
Means: I’m willing, I’m up for it

On about
Means: referring to, talking about
Example: What are you on about?

Means: help me a bit
Example: Can you give us a hand with this?
I’ll pop round
Means: I’ll come by briefly
Example: I’ll pop round later.
Bob’s your uncle
Means: and there you go, it’s done easily
Example: Add some milk, stir it, and Bob’s your uncle.
It’s chucking it down
Means: it’s raining heavily
Example: Take an umbrella, it’s chucking it down.
A few sandwiches short of a picnic
Means: someone is a bit silly or not very sharp
Example: He’s nice, but a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
As useful as a chocolate teapot
Means: completely useless
Example: This battery’s dead, it’s as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Can’t be arsed
Means: can’t be bothered, no motivation
Example: I can’t be arsed to cook tonight.
Easy peasy / Easy peasy, lemon squeezy
Means: very easy
Example: That was easy peasy.
Piece of cake
Means: very easy
Example: That test was a piece of cake.
Blimey
An expression of surprise
Example: Blimey, that was loud.
Gobsmacked
Means: extremely surprised
Example: I was gobsmacked when she told me.
That’s mental
Means: that’s crazy or unbelievable
Example: The prices are mental
