In the late 16th century, over 100 English settlers established a colony on Roanoke Island, off the coast of modern-day North Carolina. When their governor, John White, returned from a supply trip to England, he found the settlement deserted. The only clue to their whereabouts was the word "Croatoan" carved into a wooden post.
