Welcome! Let’s step back into the Medieval Era. Spinning wool has been around for thousands of years. The history of the spinning wheel has been highly disputed. From China, to India, to the Middle East, many theories on where the wheel itself actually began. With or without the invention however, the use of the drop spindles continued well into the medieval era. Spinning wool was a daily task, skipped over never. You have to imagine, every fiber they wore or used had to be hand spun. Simply think of the amount of yarn that must have been needed to create sails for a boat. Women probably multi tasked throughout the day, holding a distaff of wool in their arms while they spun. Planting, watching children, cleaning, all done with the spindle in hand. Evidence of this can be found all over fields for planting. The stone weights of the spindles found in the fields shows they must have been spinning while they worked. Today, an art practiced by some who hope to keep the history alive, it can be recreated yourself. Enjoy this short!
