💈 "Just Relax” with this hot towel shave at Starlite, Mexico City’s premier traditional barbershop.

Edgar Monroy Escutia, a 37-year-old native of Mexico City 🇲🇽, founded Starlite Barber Shop in 2017. Since then, the shop has endured an earthquake, a pandemic, and a move!

Now located in the cool and popular Roma Norte neighborhood, Starlite is housed in a spacious 1940s Art Deco style residence. Edgar remembers the challenge of restoring the floors to their original glory. The beautiful checkerboard floors were hidden under vinyl, and it was a big job to remove it all!

🎞️ When Edgar was a teenager, he was fascinated with the hairstyles of the Mexican Golden Age cinema and 1950s American Rock 'N' Roll singers. Actors Pedro Infante, Germán Valdés (Tintán), Ramón Valdés, Mauricio Garcés, Jorge Negrete, Wolf Ruvinskis, Ramón Gay, Gustavo Rojo, and Emilio “El Indio” Fernández represented a classic style that would later be an influence for Starlite Barber Shop.

The difficulty was finding a place that understood what Edgar wanted so he ultimately found other people with the same taste. Then one day, he was online and discovered some barbershops in California with a revival of traditional barbering... this sparked his desire to become a barber 💈

Starting out with used clippers, practicing on friends and family, Edgar recalls making plenty of mistakes along the way! He was motivated to find a barbershop apprenticeship after falling in love with someone who encouraged and inspired him.

Seven years ago, Edgar opened Starlite Barber Shop, inspired by the 40s and 50s. The shop reflects his love for music, mid-century modern design, and preserving a vintage spirit transporting you to a different time. Edgar focuses on traditional barbering, respecting old school methods, classic cuts and hot towel shaves. He aims for each patron to feel unique and receive a high-quality service that stands out.

With a decade of barbering under his belt, Edgar enjoys the camaraderie and creativity of barbering ✨ He previously studied Political Science and Public Administration at UNAM but realized it wouldn't make him happy.

During his free time, he enjoys producing Rockabilly events and DJing with vinyl records 🎶 His favorite neighborhoods are Centro Histórico and Roma Norte where "you can find everything to live and enjoy a cosmopolitan lifestyle in Mexico.”

For first time visitors to Mexico City, Edgar recommends visiting the city’s many museums, trying the street food with such a variety of flavors 🌮 and exploring La Lagunilla flea market on Sundays :)
