Kerry stood behind the department store makeup counter, lining lipsticks in neat rows under warm lights. Glass, chrome, and color framed her like a display of their own. Her dark hair was tucked behind one ear, her eyeliner sharp, her lips painted in a rich berry shade that made people glance twice without knowing why.
A man in a tailored suit slowed near the counter. He checked his watch, frowned at the shelves, clearly out of his depth and in a hurry.
Kerry stepped forward with a smooth, professional smile.
“Looking for a gift?”
He nodded, a little helpless. “My girlfriend wants a nice lipstick. I’m on my lunch break and I have no idea what I’m doing.”
Kerry gestured toward the most luxurious line, where slim metal tubes gleamed like jewelry.
“We’ll find something she loves. But first, take a breath. Long morning?”
“Very,” he admitted.
“Then give your brain ten seconds of reset,” she said lightly. “Just look at me for a moment. It actually helps people decide.”
He met her gaze. Her eyes were steady, warm, quietly commanding. She held that contact just long enough for the rest of the store to blur at the edges.
“Good,” she said softly. “Stay with that.”
From her apron she drew a small silver pocket watch, old fashioned and elegant. The chain slid through her fingers with a faint metallic whisper. She let the watch dangle between them, then set it into a slow, even swing.
“Now follow the shine with your eyes,” Kerry murmured.
The watch traced a gentle arc, catching the overhead light in calm flashes. The busy noise of the department store seemed to recede. His shoulders loosened. His breathing settled into a deeper rhythm as his gaze followed the motion.
“Every swing clears a little clutter from your thoughts,” she said, voice low and smooth. “You’re here because you care about her. You want something beautiful, something that feels like the best. Let that feeling grow.”
The circle of silver moved back and forth, rhythmic and simple. His face softened, the tightness around his mouth fading.
“You can hear me clearly,” Kerry continued. “It feels natural to trust my advice. Choosing the finest lipstick feels generous and right. You enjoy spending more when it means she lights up every time she wears it. The more premium it is, the better it feels to give.”
A small, relaxed smile touched his lips.
“In a moment,” she added, “you’ll feel wide awake, clear, and sure: premium only. No hesitation.”
She slowed the watch, then folded it into her palm and slipped it back into her pocket.
“Take a deep breath,” she said. “And another. Back with me now.”
He blinked, straightened, and looked at the couture display as though a decision had already been made.
“For someone important,” Kerry said, resting her hands on the counter, “I recommend our top collection. Best formula, longest wear, packaging that feels like a little piece of luxury.”
He nodded with quiet conviction. “Let’s do it. One classic red, one everyday shade, and something bold. She should have the good stuff.”
Kerry chose three of the most expensive lipsticks, opening each to show the colors: a vivid ruby, a soft rose, a deep plum. She described the texture, the way they caught the light, how they’d look in a handbag. Her words slipped easily into the certainty already sitting in his mind.
“I’ll take all three,” he said, handing over his card without flinching at the total.
She wrapped the lipsticks in tissue, tucked them into a small ribboned bag, and passed it to him with a calm, knowing smile.
“She’s going to feel very spoiled.”
“Good,” he replied. “That’s exactly what I want.”
He walked back into the crowd, already picturing his girlfriend’s reaction. Kerry slipped the pocket watch back into her apron, berry lips curving in a small, satisfied smile as she turned toward the next customer drifting into her orbit.
