🇨🇦 Free Haircuts & Hugs For Homeless In Vancouver BC | Street Thug Barbers Short Film

Street Thug Barbers Short Film. Every Sunday you will find Street Thug Barbers providing free haircuts and hugs to the homeless and low-income community in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

In 2015, friends Cameron Sterling and Josh Malcolm discussed doing something in the community. So they went to Oppenheimer Park in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside and began giving haircuts to people who were homeless and anyone who was in need. The name, Street Thug Barbers, was a tongue-in-cheek reference to Cameron's past.

Josh explains, "the baseline of what we do is and what we tell people to do and live is just to pay it forward; you know be kind to your neighbors." He says he tells his clients "to bake an apple pie for your neighbors."

Josh adds, "you don't need to do anything specifically for homeless people or people in need but just to pay life forward and connect with different people and have conversations and smile at people and really recognize the community that is around you and be involved in it . . ."

Shawna grew up on the streets of Vancouver BC and she now volunteers with Street Thug Barbers. “This is my community,” Shawna told us, “and they [Street Thug Barbers] come into my community and the smiles that they put on peoples’ faces. The compassion and love that they gave to the ‘down and out’ and hopeless is what attracted me to the Street Thug Barber movement. The awesomeness that comes out of what they were doing really warmed my heart. I didn’t ask them I just pushed my way in.”

This short documentary was filmed in 2018 and 2019.
