Hey all this was our first member video of February suggested by the lovely @starlinn04 I'm so happy to have the opportunity to speak about Canadian history in an honest way. It is WAY too easy to erase and launder our country's part in white supremacy and anti-blackness. But I truly think that celebrating Black communities in Canada, speaking about our real history, and realizing that we only improve by growing after our mistakes, is the way that our country is able to move forward.
Of course, I want to have it in writing that I am a white Canadian and therefore come from a privileged and colonial perspective looking at this history. I HIGHLY encourage anyone watching this to do research about Black Canadian history and the Black communities that sprung up and prospered in our country despite an air of discrimination. I also highly encourage you to look into Canada's Residential School system and its efforts to erase countless First Nations' cultures across our nation.
I am not saying this country is evil, but looking at our history it is interesting that some people get defensive about certain things. Many pieces of our history are evil, but that is not an excuse to cover them up. It is an opportunity to call it out and make a society in which evil is never allowed to take hold ever again. This goes for Canada and many other nations on Earth. I'm not asking anyone to hate their country, but rather grapple with the real history of it and become advocates for a more fair and welcoming society.
Let's see if we get the demonetized tag on this one 😉 see how dedicated to free speech big tech really is lol.
