ASMR: Tulip Mania, The First Economic Bubble, History Facts | Ear-to-ear Whispering
During what historians call the Dutch Golden Age, tulip bulbs became objects of intense value speculation, with contract prices for rare varieties rising dramatically before collapsing, equally dramatically, in 1637. The story is often described as the first recorded speculative bubble, but is it? In this video, we find out that its effects on the wider Dutch economy may have frequently been exaggerated.
I was also surprised to learn that a large number of the tulip varieties traded in this period are completely extinct now. Another thing that I found quite interesting was that it appears as though the majority of trading was not to buy or sell individual tulip bulbs directly, but instead contracts to fulfil purchase orders to trade tulips at future times.
