Story: “The Persistent Lumberjack”

Once upon a time, there was a lumberjack
who applied for a job at a logging company.
The pay was good,
and the working conditions were attractive,
so the lumberjack wanted to make a great first impression.
On the first day, he reported to the foreman,
who handed him an axe
and assigned him a specific area in the forest.
Eagerly, the lumberjack got to work.
In just one day, he cut down eighteen trees.
‘Congratulations,’ said the foreman. ‘Keep it up.’
Motivated by the praise,
the lumberjack decided
he would beat his own record the next day.
So that night, he went to bed early.
The next morning,
he was up before anyone else
and went straight into the forest.
Despite all his efforts,
he managed only fifteen trees.
‘I must be tired,’ he thought,
and decided to sleep right after sunset that evening.
At dawn,
he woke up with the determination
to surpass his eighteen-tree record.
But that day,
he didn’t even make it to half.
The next day, he managed just seven trees,
and the day after that, only five.
On his final day,
he spent nearly the whole time
cutting down a single tree.
Worried about what the foreman would say,
the lumberjack went to him
and explained what had happened.
He swore up and down
that he had worked as hard as he possibly could.
The foreman asked,
‘When was the last time you sharpened your axe?’
‘Sharpen my axe?
I didn’t have time for that –
I was too busy cutting down trees.’”*

to cover a temporary incapability
with sheer willpower."
