In 524 BC, a Persian army of 50,000 soldiers was sent into the Egyptian desert by King Cambyses II. According to Herodotus, the entire army vanished in a sandstorm. The history itself is interesting, but I also found the controversial search and resulting drama quite entertaining to learn about.
