Hartford, Connecticut, was founded in 1636 by a group of settlers led by Reverend Thomas Hooker. They migrated from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in search of greater religious and political freedom. The area was originally inhabited by the Pequot and Mohegan tribes. In 1637, the settlers joined forces with neighboring colonies to defeat the Pequot tribe in the Pequot War, securing their settlement.
In 1639, the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut were adopted, establishing a framework for self-government. This document is considered one of the first written constitutions in America. Over the years, Hartford grew as a center for trade and commerce due to its strategic location along the Connecticut River. By the time the American Revolution began in 1775, Hartford was an established and thriving community. Connecticut declared its independence from British rule in 1776, and Hartford continued to develop as an important city in the new nation.
