In this session we explore the largest ancient woodland in Wales - Wentwood Forest. 🌳 🏴
This woodland was originally part of a much larger ancient forest used by the Celtic tribes & Druids and later as hunting ground for the Lordship of Chepstow.
It once extended between the rivers Usk and Wye which divided the old kingdom of Gwent into two – Gwent Uwchcoed and Iscoed, that is, above and below the wood.
The area contains Bronze Age burial mounds, a stone circle, and a megalithic alignment on Gray Hill, Monmouthshire.
This forest is home to a variety of wildlife including Wild boar, Adders, Muntjac deer, Fallow deer, Turtle dove, Field vole, Hazel dormouse, Jay, Common lizard and Bullfinch.
