We recently had the opportunity to visit a truly unique barbershop in Costa Mesa, California. Housed in an industrial workshop space, this has been the eclectic home to Eagle & Pig for 10 years. Dane Hesse, owner and barber, describes the space as a reflection of himself.
As soon as you walk inside the shop, you’ll see Dane’s old Ford pick-up truck. It used to be his primary vehicle, but he missed having air conditioning in the California heat so now it is parked inside his barbershop. The shop showcases all the things Dane loves: surfing, skateboarding, old cars, motorcycles, and whiskey.
Dane feels the shop resonates with his customers because of the unique decor and vibe of the shop.
“I think that’s a big part of why the shop does well is you can come in here and even if you think it’s weird overall, you can find something on the wall that might connect you to something, a thought, a memory, a place.”
Dane believes the barbering profession is meant to help take care of people – something he’s passionate about.
“My job is that 10 square feet by my chair and that’s the most important, it’s my sphere of influence,” he said. “The goal is always to be good and to take care of other people as much as you possibly can.”
