What is core shame?
In my own words, core shame is the painful and deeply engrained belief one has about themself that says "someway, somehow, no matter what at my core, I am bad and I must fix it or not participate".
Shame is everywhere, and we all experience it. But core shame is a little different- sticky, engrained in our self-concept, hard to identify, and often intergenerational. For many, it causes us to doubt our feelings and thoughts (self-gaslighting), lead perfectionistic lives, and hustle to be better-than to avoid this pain.
I think most of us don't realize we carry this belief until we're face down in the mud, and someone else shows us a different way to see the world. For me, it was picking up The Gifts of Imperfection by BrenƩ Brown. And well... I'm not done healing this wound. None of us probably are. But that's why creating this resource is important to me.
The other day during a tender and vulnerable moment with a friend, when I was sharing a part of my story that brings me shame, she said something really meaningful to me.
"I wish you could see yourself the way that I see you. There is so much to love."
She modeled friendship and compassion in a way I've not seen many times in my life. I hope I can model this acceptance and love for you too. Especially if you didn't see this growing up- it can be very powerful.
Believing we are somehow bad is not serving any of us. Let's heal together š
