A few other videos and comments out there have misleading information about what happens if you are arrested in Japan. I actually went to the International Center here in Nagoya (Kokusai Center) and spoke to the staff there. To verify the information, I called them again in front of Tomoko and spoke in Japanese with the legal hotline staff. Just to cover all my bases, I then asked the staff to repeat what they had told me to Tomoko.
